Over the weekend, we celebrated our annual Halloween Party. My three-year-old daughter couldn’t have been more excited for our intimate Halloween Bash. We invited her grandparents and uncle to our Halloween themed Sunday night dinner.
In the months leading up to the party, we began working on our table decor. As you can see, there are a bunch of different things on the table – painted acorns, mini pumpkins, and Halloween foam shapes. But this whole festive table began with acorns.
About a month and a half ago, we found a bunch of acorns near my daughter’s favourite neighbourhood park. We found big ones, small ones and all of them were covered with tree sap.
“Wouldn’t it be fun to paint these with fall colours,” I asked my daughter. With excitement in her eyes, she exclaimed, “Yes!”
We brought them home and placed them on a tinfoil covered baking sheet. This protected our counters from the acorn’s sap and then we placed them in the oven to make sure that these outdoor beauties weren’t housing any unwanted visitors. With the acorns baking in the oven, the sap hardened and my home filled with the smells of a sweet, fresh forest.
Once the acorns are baked clean, they’re ready to paint. We painted them in four different colours – yellow, red, orange and purple. There’s nothing like seeing the beautiful shades of autumn in your home. It adds warmth, beauty and kids can create it too. (See below for the simple steps.)
To add to the Halloween vibe, I placed a bunch of mini pumpkins in a crystal vase. I love the combination of natural pumpkins with the details of the vase. For the other pumpkins that couldn’t fit in the vase, I placed them along the middle of the table, like a runner, and I added the painted acorns in between.
Around each person’s seat are Halloween foam shapes. I wish I kept the package to share with you, but I found it at a local dollar store. (Yay for frugal holiday fun!) The package came with foam stickers and googly eyes to create all the fun creations around the table. Aren’t they sweet! I’d like to say that I made them, but my daughter did it all by herself.
Give your home the festive feelings of fall. Painted acorns can bring the beauty of the season into any home.
